Last week in sports saw a number of major events. Most notably, the sporting world lost NBA legend Bill Russell, one of basketball’s pioneers and a great man. To move into what we saw in the field of play, however, one baseball team rose far above the rest last week and a WNBA team continue a run of dominance that still cannot be stopped.
The New York Mets are our MLB Team of the Week after an impressive 5-0 stretch that saw a home sweep of the cross-town Yankees and a road sweep of Sandy Alcántara and the Miami Marlins. The Mets have first place pretty much all season, but have recently had the Braves breathing down their necks, pulling within a game of the division lead. This week was big in getting a little bit of wiggle room for the NL East leaders. They’ve played some of their best baseball lately, and are rumored to be big players in this week’s upcoming trade deadline. Oh, and they will get Jacob deGrom back here soon. The Mets are already scary and they’re just getting started.
I know what you’re probably thinking: the Aces again? Really? Yes, really. I would love to give another team the opportunity to be recognized here. All they have to do is play basketball as well as the Las Vegas Aces, who are our WNBA Team of the Week (again). They went and beat the reigning champion (and #1 seed) Sky in Chicago, before taking back to back road wins over the Indiana Fever, first by 21 points and then by 25. In spite of what the standings say, there is good reason to believe the WNBA runs through Las Vegas.
