Last Week In Sports: September 26, 2022

What a week. Judge Watch is fully underway, as Aaron Judge is sitting on 60 home runs and eyeing the AL single-season home run record. Albert Pujols knocked out his 700th career homer in the midst of an unbelievable second half. Lots and lots of MLB playoff spots were locked up, while Week 3 of the NFL season gave us just as many must-watch matchups as Weeks 1 and 2. There were eleven one-score games in Week 3, with six matchups decided by a field goal or fewer points. Jimmy Garoppolo pulling a Dan Orlovsky was the difference between a win and a loss for the Denver Broncos, while the Jacksonville Jaguars remain in first place with a shocking blowout of the reeling Los Angeles Chargers. Last week was absolutely incredible, so let’s get into which teams we are celebrating this week.

Not many people had the Cleveland Guardians winning the AL Central going into the season. Having spent each of the last two seasons slashing salary and trading everyone not named Shane Bieber or Jose Ramirez, the Guardians were seen as a team in the midst of a re-tool, at least a year away from playoff contention. Well, all of that talk can officially be tossed to the side, as last week Cleveland went 7-0 and clinched a competitive American League Central. Congratulations on a strong season to the Elias Game Plan MLB Team of the Week!

We now move from one over-performing team that had middling expectations going into the season to another. Our NFL Team of the Week is the Miami Dolphins, whose win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday have them as one of just two teams to reach 3-0 this season. In spite of an incredibly untimely safety (butt punt!), the Fins’ D held one of the top-scoring teams in the league to just 19 points. Tua Tagovailoa has silenced his doubters so far this season, and Miami is rolling on both sides of the ball. With wins over two 2021 playoff teams and Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens, one thing is clear: the Dolphins have their sights set on the postseason.
