The midway point of the 2022 NFL season is fast approaching, which means that things continue to get more challenging for survivor pool players. As the list of teams to choose from continues to shrink, the choices get more difficult. Going into survivor pool Week 8 action, there are only three teams favored by a touchdown or more, meaning that players who have already chosen said teams will have to think outside the box when making their picks.

Survivor Pool Week 7 Recap

Before we get to our Week 8 breakdown, let’s first look back at the results of the last week for popular survivor pool teams. The majority of the most popular Week 7 plays did manage to make it through, though it wasn’t easy for all of them:

  • The Dallas Cowboys defense decimated the Detroit Lions
  • Las Vegas managed to pull away from the Houston Texans late in the fourth quarter
  • Joe Burrow threw for over 400 yards to help the Bengals beat the Falcons
  • The Baltimore Ravens hung on to defeat the Cleveland Browns

Pats and Bucs Betray Survivor Pool Players

While those popular survivor pool plays all came through for those who backed them, the two most popular picks of the week did not. The New England Patriots went into Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears as a 7.5-point favorite, but were blown out by a 33-14 margin. New England benched Mac Jones for Bailey Zappe, which looked promising at the end of the first half, but the momentum from that decision fizzled out in the final two quarters of play.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also fell short for survivor pool players, as they were beaten handily by the Carolina Panthers. Tom Brady and the Buccaneers offense managed to score just three points in a game in which they were outplayed by P.J. Walker and a Carolina offense that moved the ball surprisingly well.

Popular Week 8 Matchups

For those that managed to survive a week where the Patriots and Buccaneers let so many players down, we salute you. Now, using Elias Insights, let’s take a look at the most popular survivor pool selections on the NFL Week 8 schedule.

Philadelphia Eagles (vs. Pittsburgh Steelers)

Sporting an undefeated record and coming off of their bye week, the Philadelphia Eagles are the most popular NFL Week 8 survivor pool pick at Yahoo! Sports. They are double-digit favorites against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who themselves are coming off of a loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday Night Football. The Eagles have hosted the Steelers twice in Mike Tomlin’s tenure with Pittsburgh, with the Eagles winning both of those games, a streak survivor players will hope continues.

So far this season, the Eagles have outscored their opponents by an average of 9.3 points per game, winning four of their six games by more than a touchdown. Against a Steelers team that has scored more than 20 points just once this season, and that performance coming in an overtime win in Week 1, survivor pool players are expecting another lopsided affair featuring Philadelphia.

Dallas Cowboys (vs. Chicago Bears)

The Dallas Cowboys welcomed Dak Prescott back to the field last week in a win against the Detroit Lions, but it was the defense that took the game over for Dallas, holding the Lions to just six points. This week, the Cowboys are a heavy favorite at home for the second straight week, facing a Bears team that will try and replicate their upset victory from Monday night against the New England Patriots.

Justin Fields and the Bears will face a Cowboys defense that has played at a high level at home of late. In their last three home games, the Cowboys have allowed an average of just 11 points per game. To combat that defense, the Bears will hope to get close to the 243 rushing yards they put up on the Patriots in Week 7.

Buffalo Bills (vs. Green Bay Packers)

For those who have not used the Buffalo Bills yet in their survivor pools, this week is shaping up to be a popular week to do so. Buffalo enters as an 11-point favorite against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football. With Green Bay struggling of late, having lost three consecutive games as a favorite, this is the first time in Aaron Rodgers’ career that he enters a game as a double-digit underdog.

Something has to give for survivor pool players in this contest. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is 16-2 in primetime games during the regular season. However, Josh Allen is 16-2 in games where his team is favored by a touchdown or more. Survivor pool competitors are backing Allen to improve to 17-2 in that position, rather than LaFleur.

Miami Dolphins (at Detroit Lions)

Earlier, we mentioned that the list of teams to choose from in survivor pools was starting to dwindle as the midway point of the season draws near. That, combined with the fact that there are only three teams favored by five or more points this week, has resulted in the Miami Dolphins being a popular Week 8 pick. Miami is a 3.5-point favorite in Detroit this week, in a game where survivor pool participants may be going more against the Lions than they are backing the Dolphins.

Working in the favor of Dolphins backers is the fact that Tua Tagovailoa is back on the field. Miami is 4-0 in games that Tagovailoa plays to completion, including last week’s 16-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Against the worst scoring defense in the NFL, survivor pool players are banking on Tagovailoa and company to pick up another victory.

Tennessee Titans (at Houston Texans)

The Tennessee Titans have won four games in a row, and survivor pool players have faith in them to make it five in a row as they take on the Houston Texans on Sunday. Houston comes into this game at 1-4-1 on the season, with their lone win coming against the Jacksonville Jaguars. In this contest, the running game of the Titans is expected to have a sizable impact on the outcome.

This season, the Texans rank last in the NFL in run defense, allowing 164.7 yards per game on the ground. Meanwhile, Derrick Henry has averaged the second-most rushing yards in the NFL since Week 3, averaging 107.3 yards per game during that span. Another big game from Henry is what survivor pool players are anticipating in Week 8 in Houston.

Atlanta Falcons (vs. Carolina Panthers)

While the Carolina Panthers pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2022 NFL season last week against the Buccaneers, survivor pool players don’t believe that they can win a second straight game. The Atlanta Falcons are a popular pick in survivor pools this week, as the Panthers are still shorthanded offensively after trading away Christian McCaffrey and Robbie Anderson before last week’s win over Tampa.

For Atlanta to come through for survivor pool players, they are going to need to hold Chuba Hubbard and D’Onta Foreman in check out of the Carolina backfield. The Buccaneers were not able to do that, giving up 181 combined yards on the ground to those two backs. If Atlanta does a better job of keeping them from breaking off long runs, Atlanta could satisfy survivor pool players in Week 8.
